Wawrzyniec Ejsmont was born in 1928 in the Eastern Borderlands of Poland which as the result of the Yalta conference after World War II were incorporated into the Soviet Union. As a young boy he spent three years of his military service in the Donetsk coal mines in Ukraine followed by another few years in the Arctic regions of The Komi Republic where he was sent to perform forced labour.
